António Jorge Gonçalves
Visual Performer
Author of graphic novels, visual performer and political cartoonist.
António Jorge Gonçalves has worked as a visual director in several stage plays. Drawing digitally in real time and manipulating objects on an overhead projector of transparencies, he has worked in performative actions with musicians, actors and dancers in Portugal, France, Germany, the USA, Japan, Brazil and Sweden.
His books have been published in Portugal, Italy, Brazil, Germany, Spain and Mexico, and have been awarded at the Festival Internacional de Banda Desenhada Amadora BD (Amadora International Comics Festival). He has collaborated with several authors in creating works where text and image connect in exploratory ways. In 2014, he was awarded the National Illustration Award (DGLB).
He has created Subway Life, a project where he draws people sitting in subways in cities all over the world.
Since 2003, he has worked as a cartoonist for Inimigo Público (a weekly satirical supplement of Público newspaper). His cartoons have been awarded at the World Press Cartoon and published in Le Monde and Courrier International, as well as several international anthologies.
António Jorge Gonçalves has a BA in Communication Design from the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, and an MA in Theatre Design from the Slade School of Fine Art, in London, where he was studying under a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He has worked as a teacher at IADE and RESTART and lectured Performative Spaces at NOVA University of Lisbon (Masters Degree in Performing Arts). In 2015, he was part of the 10 x 10 pedagogic project at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, as a teaching artist
